Images Representing Future Aspirations

Each of these images is representative of a possible future aspiration. This is not always necessarily the case in terms of the actual subject matter, but may just be due to design or even simpler things like use of colour.

Plant pot.

The simplistic and repetitive design is of interest to me.

Scape smoking area.

The architecture makes this building have a seemingly endless feel to it. I think this is done by the repetition of the same design on each face of the building. I like how they have created rectangular panels. This gives the building a very modern look to it.

Post boxes.

Here I like the vibrant use of colours along with the makeup of regular shapes.

Lighting and ceiling pattern.

Boxed wall design.

The interior design here is both abstract and modern. I like the idea of using repetitive shapes however i think it would look better with a more limited and mellow palette.

Spiral stair case.

The way in which the stair case seems to disappear to within the building through the ceiling I think is a very clever way of integrating floors within the building.

Time Line

As one of the exercises given to us by our tutor we had to document our first week of going to Ravensbourne in the form of a time line. However we were instructed to be as unconventional as possible in doing so in order to create a work of art from it. I decided to make a cube with each side representing something which was new to me having lived in London for a week. The cube was relevant to me as I like the exact precision of its shape.

Time line 1.

The string side is supposed to represent our visit to the serpentine. I chose this as it was one of my favourite pieces of art i saw throughout the week. Also it allowed me to change the cube from a conventional shape to slightly abstract, which hopefully makes it look slightly more unorthodox.

Time line 2.

The reason I chose to draw Ravensbourne, as uninspiring as it may seem, is not just because its the new college we started, but is actually because I really enjoy the architecture behind it. I find the building fascinating due to the way in which it incorporates all different shapes in all different sizes.

Time line 3.

After this I drew Scape. This is the student accommodation I am staying in.  It again interests me due to the architecture. But I also like how the outside of the building seems to change in appearance when you walk around it. The angle at which I have drawn it as well is one of my preferred angles when taking photos.

Time line 4.

The london underground was something I was not overly familiar with before moving to London. However having moved here a week ago it is something I have been using on a regular basis and therefore have got very accustomed to. The infrastructure which has gone into it is something I find very captivating. I also like the way in which the trains, tunnels, and platforms all slot perfectly into one another.

Time line 5.

Serpentine

Having visited the V&A we then went on to visit the serpentine. Unfortunately it was not open when we went to view it. However we were able to see the linear structure which was built outside it.

I found the serpentine extremely inspirational. This is because I am interested by modern architectural design. The way in which they have incorporated such features along with abstraction allows this huge sculpture to seem way before its time. By this I mean that I can see future designs possibly stemming from the idea's conveyed here.

The unconventional use of extended planes beyond the point of which they have purpose (in a structural sense) makes the build have a seemingly endless feel to it. Another aspect of this image I like is that every bar is in either a horizontal or vertical plane bar the one on the left. This creates an immediate focal point which draws the viewers attention to that part of the image.

Serpentine abstracts drawing.

When drawing this I wanted to make it more abstract than the actual serpentine however capturing its essence.

Memory Palace

On Tuesday 3rd of September we visited the V&A gallery. Here there was a art exhibition called 'Memory Palace.' I found the exhibition to be extremely thought provoking as it begged the question of which direction our current society was heading towards.

In the arguably unsustainable modern world in which we live many simplistic morals have been dismissed and replaced by more materialistic aspirations. The exhibition allowed me to see how man kind has become very selfish in the way in which we live, and how we may one day become responsible for the destruction of our own society.

One of the art pieces in there was a sculpture showing the hierarchy in society. At the bottom of the sculpture was the word 'optimism', in the middle the word 'subordinate', and at the top a one eyed man. I gained from this that it was supposed to be showing how through society corruption evolves as power is gained. However i believe the one eyed man represented the instillation of karma throughout society.

Social hierarchy.

This is my take on the sculpture representing the 'social hierarchy'. I like the simplicity and precision of this drawing created through linear qualities. Although I do think adding more layers to it may have made it more interesting.

Placebo.

I drew this from the design museum for the pure fact that I found it thought provoking. I think it is representational of all the things we are lead to believe in life which become regardless as to whether they are true or not due to the 'placebo effect'.

Destruction.

There was a drawing in the museum which showed the collapse of buildings. I decided to recreate this in a very linear way using only my ruler to make any marks. I like how I have combined abstraction and actual physicality. However I think this needed to be gone over with a fine liner as it does not stand out enough.

Alien.

This is a drawing from one of the sculptures in the museum. I think it is meant to be representational of how without communication the human race becomes alienated from one another.

Feedback.

Customer.

This I believe is representational of how other senses have to be used to try to re-teach the human race of how to read and write as they are now blind to the world.

Enterprise.

Finally this one says to me that this person is now using old similar methods of communication in order to try to form a new method of communication. I particularly liked this one as it shows how man-kind can develop and re-teach themselves something unforgotten. This proves mind over matter.

10 personal items

As one of our original tasks when starting Ravensbourne we were asked to bring in 10 items which were representational of our past, present and future. We then had to do a sketch of these items which were to be used to make and bury a time capsule. Each item was personal to me for a variety of reasons, but most of the points of interest for me and in the structure, layout or design.

These were all of the 10 items I brought in with me. We were asked to arrange them in an order which we felt was representational of what they are, and fitting to the meaning of each of them. I arranged them with some objects lying flat whilst others were propped up. This is because I am interested in the idea of not only two-dimensional objects, but also three-dimensional ones.

I brought this bottle back from when I went to Barcelona with a friend. The vibrance along with the abstract patterned design are what I really enjoy it. Also the shape of the bottle, although it is not dissimilar from any other shaped bottle I think is eye catching as it continuous.

10 items.

This was my representational drawing of the objects I had chosen. I decided to draw everything within the bottle other than the letters. This was because I liked the construction of the bottle anyway, and the it already had a very messy look to it before I took my abstract take on it. I like the way in which the letters seem to fire out the top. However adding colour in certain places would have helped create focal points.

Burial 1.

I decided to bury my time capsule in a bush as many of the items I acquired have relations to me being out doors and often 'with nature.'

Burial 2.

I also buried them in the evening as many of these items were used, given to me, or bought at night.

Burial 3.

If I was to bury these items again I think I would post them into a glass bottle and then put them into the river. This is because there is even more of a sense of nature with this and also it confirms that they are well and truly with nature then.. Where they belong.

Visit to Design Museum

When I visited the Design Museum my first impression was that it was lacking in striking pieces of art. Although I still believed this was the case once I came out, I did manage to find a few sculptures which could become possible points of inspiration.

These lights were of interest to me due to the way in which they evolve from a solid structure to having gaps in between the sculpture. The transition is elegant which allows the lights to flow between these stages.

This is a striking light due to the fact that there is a clear divide between the actual light source and excess design which allows the light to seem larger than it is.

The circular qualities and clear precision used to make both of the 'lamp shades' of these lights, allows them to be very minimalistic whilst having an aspect of complexity about them.

The way in which this chair was made was what interested me. A machine instantaneously set putty into the chair shape by threading each individual strand that can be seen. This allows the chair to flow, and gives precise linear qualities.

The contrast of one sofa with clear opposing planes, against the other other sofa which is made to meld between each of its sides, makes each sofa seem dramatically different despite both of their simplistic qualities.
