Project 1
The first week of 3D has been very experimental. Geoff has tried to impose upon us a way of creating idea's from a quite loose and random starting point. This way we are able to create idea's which are original. Although at this early stage much of what I have created has not necessarily had any resemblance of an actual construction, the idea's have differed from what I would have normally created. We started the week by making random 3D objects out of many different types of materials. We then went on to choose our ten favorite images we took of these objects and using these images had to trace over them to create something new. As I am more swaying toward architecture my challenge was to create interior or exterior spaces from the outlines created in these images whilst using my artistic license. I did however also create a number of product based drawings including lights ect.

Another part of this piece I like is the way in which the circular parts of it are continuous. This allows for the sculpture to flow between all of its separate boundaries.
By using cable ties and poking holes through sheets of corrugated card I created this structure. My initial thoughts on it were that it represented a car park. However having revisited it I could see that it could have many product like functions. some of these may be a book shelve to hold different sized books. It could also be a number of diving boards which could be connected by interlinking ladders.

The reason the structures made form the laser cut are some of my favorites is purely because of the exact cut which is given. All of the shapes which I cut out multiple times were exact replicas which gives the models a very chic finish.

Imagining this as a three-dimensional building where the empty spaces are filled in with glass would allow for it to be an extremely abstract yet planimetric build. Furthermore I like the way in which the laser cutter leaves this burnt pattern on the cardboard. It makes it seem very minimalist.

Here I used cable ties along with bent wire in order to create a structure. This maquette had lots of shape to it. Although I did not at first like to outcome of the shapes as I felt it was too disorganised and random, when I came to photograph the sculpture the shadows it created I saw could be inspirational.

Imaging this structure as possibly a flamboyant staircase gives it more purpose. This was what originally came to mind when I made it and if I were to keep the colour scheme monochromatic I feel this could work.

Putting a figure next to this structure is what turns this from quite a bland piece of work into a monstrous sculpture. Simply by giving it scale it can then be envisioned as a huge tunnel or grand piece of architecture.

The contrast of linear contours opposing circular planes is what I find most interesting about this piece. Moreover the randomness of where the circular planes are placed against the quite structured linear edges allows for there to be more contrast of regular against irregular.

This sculpture was one of my favorites. I like the simplicity about it has. This could easily be turned into a modern building imaging that the straws are steel work and the outside could be covered in glass.

The contrasting shadow which is gained when I shone a light on this very repetitive sculpture I find very captivating. The way in which the shadow seem to join together all the contours allows for this piece to become envisioned for me as a large building.

By punching holes in the plastic sheet and threading the wire covering through these holes I was able to hold together the plastic sheet in a way which created a very interesting mesh. If the lines represented floors of a building or even a place to store knives if I was thinking of making a product, it could become a quite inventive way of designing.

On our second day of 3D teaching we went up to the computer room and with the help of Anna designed random 2D shapes on 'InDesign'. We put small slits in the shapes created in order to be able to slot them together. These were then laser cut for us and given to us on Thursday.

The shadow created behind could be great inspiration for tracing over to invent a new sculpture to be shown as a final piece for the project. As I am interested in very structured shapes this may allow me to create a regimental final piece.

Drawn idea. This came from looking at the repetition of lines used on the blue and red cross-hatched maquette.

Another initial idea which came from the same image. Using the linear aspects as a structural component is something I intended on doing to create my final piece.

In my final piece I did come to use the repetition of lines. I chose to this this so that not only it would seem structural but also to make it more aesthetically pleasing.

If I where to recreate this model I would have made it so that the wire could be removed. The reason I did not do this when I first tried was because I was finding it extremely difficult to mould the wire. However had I had time I could have used a solid block as the base which would have allowed me to do this.

For the front door to this gallery I decided to simply keep to the moulding wire theme and simply mould it around where the door would be. This gives it quite an abstract look which I like. However I could have done it more carefully.
